London
will be treated to a spectacular dot-to-dot light and laser show
connecting the new Shard skyscraper to the city's other famous
landmarks, including the Gherkin and St Paul's Cathedral.
Green lasers will shoot from the top of Europe's tallest building on Thursday 5 July to celebrate the opening of The View from the Shard.
To add to the drama, the London Philharmonic Orchestra will play a
rousing musical accompaniment from Old Billingsgate market, just across
the Thames.
If you're going to
catch the spectacle at the London Bridge Quarter, then you could stop by
the newly opened CitizenM Bankside, or to the Quarter Bar at London
Bridge Hotel for a pre-show cocktail. For the best view, however, we
recommend finding a spot on one of London's best rooftop bars, such as
Coq D'Argent or Frank's Café & Campari Bar. Alternatively, the view
from one of London's many surrounding hills, such as Primrose Hill,
could be spectacular if it is a clear evening.
Officially
opening in February 2013, The View from the Shard will allow members of
the public to ascend via high-speed lifts 244 metres above ground level
to the 72nd floor. Those with a head for heights will have a 360 degree
views of the city and beyond, stretching for over 60 kilometres.
While
the public can't yet go inside the Shard, the 310-metre Renzo
Piano-designed building can be seen from all over the capital. Until The
View from the Shard opens next year, those keen to see London from
above can board the brand new Emirates Air Line - a cable car journey
across the River Thames - or instead climb to the top of the O2 dome.
